• In May 2011 the costliest tornado struck in Joplin Missouri just after the high school graduation on Sunday May 22, The tornado touched down in a mile wide swath that destroyed that school and killed 158 people. The Joplin Tornado was a category 5 storm and became one of the early events to appear on social media. It initiated one of the first opportunities to recruit volunteers for disaster response.
